Defense Minister awaits completion of criminal investigation into Kalo Chorio fire

Cypriot Minister of Defense Vasilis Palmas announced on August 9, 2026, that he has received the investigative report regarding the fire at the Kalo Chorio firing range. The report was submitted to him by the Chief of the National Guard last Friday. Minister Palmas stated he has studied almost the entire document and expects to complete his review by Monday, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination.

Despite reviewing the findings, the Minister declined to comment on specific details, citing an ongoing criminal investigation by the Police. He explained that any public remarks at this stage could potentially interfere with the legal proceedings. Consequently, the Ministry will await the finalization of the criminal probe, which will then be forwarded to the Law Office of the Republic. Once this legal process concludes, the Ministry of Defense intends to address any remaining issues, including potential disciplinary actions related to the National Guard.
