Traffic safety regulations and vehicle impoundment in Cyprus

Recent updates from Cypriot authorities have highlighted strict traffic regulations affecting daily driving habits. As of October 1, 2020, legislation was enacted to increase penalties for traffic offenses, specifically those contributing to serious or fatal accidents. Among these regulations, drivers are reminded that consuming a beverage, such as coffee, while operating a vehicle is classified as "driving without free hands," specifically involving an object other than a mobile phone. This infraction results in an 85-euro fine and one penalty point. In comparison, improper mobile phone usage while driving carries a steeper penalty of 150 euros and two penalty points.

Furthermore, police have increased night-time patrols and vehicle impoundments across Cyprus, enforced under Article 10A of the Road Safety Law. This legislation empowers law enforcement to immobilize and impound vehicles to ensure public safety. Once a vehicle is seized, it is transported to a secure storage facility designated by the Chief of Police. Owners must follow specific legal procedures to recover their vehicles, as release is not automatic and requires compliance with regulatory requirements before the car can be legally driven again.
