Court denies bail to father in Xylofagou child death case

A Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) court has denied a bail request from a 30-year-old father whose two sons, aged 8 and 10, were found dead inside a vehicle in Xylofagou on June 28, 2026. The court also rejected his application to travel to Bulgaria to attend his children's funeral. Consequently, the man remains in custody as he awaits trial.

The defense lawyer, Christos Th. Theodoulou, revealed that the court's decision was largely based on the prosecution's argument that there is no practical or enforceable mechanism to ensure compliance with bail conditions if the defendant is outside the jurisdiction of the British Bases. In response, the defense has written to the Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus seeking clarification on the cooperation framework between the two legal systems.

The defendant is facing charges of causing death through reckless and negligent acts, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison. The next court hearing is scheduled for September 22, 2026, when the defendant is expected to enter a plea.
