Protest at Limassol General Hospital over child's critical condition

On Monday, August 10, 2026, dozens of protesters gathered outside the Limassol General Hospital to demand accountability regarding the medical treatment of a four-year-old boy, Marios. The child, who was initially treated for viral meningitis, is currently brain-dead and being cared for at the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia. His family alleges severe medical negligence, claiming that staff failed to provide adequate care despite repeated pleas for help during his seven-day stay at the Limassol facility, where the mother claims no specialized neurologist was available.

In response to the public outcry and the family's accusations, the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY) confirmed that both internal and police investigations are currently underway. Authorities are reviewing the handling of the case and have already collected testimonies from the medical staff involved. The Minister of Health previously stated that a formal complaint was filed, prompting police intervention. OKYpY emphasized the importance of the presumption of innocence while promising full cooperation with independent investigators to clarify the sequence of events and address any potential professional failures.
