Protest held at Limassol General Hospital over critically ill child
On August 10, 2026, dozens of citizens gathered outside the Limassol General Hospital to demand accountability regarding the medical treatment of a four-year-old boy named Marios. The child was diagnosed with viral meningitis and is currently in a state of brain death at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia. Marios's mother, Andri Charalambous, alleges severe negligence and medical malpractice, claiming that doctors failed to address the child's deteriorating condition, providing only antipyretics while the child developed edema and herniation.
The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) has confirmed that both police and internal investigations are currently underway to determine the facts of the case. Statements have been taken from involved medical staff as authorities review the procedures followed before the child’s transfer to Nicosia. SHSO expressed sympathy for the family's situation but emphasized the necessity of upholding the presumption of innocence during the ongoing probe. The family remains determined to pursue the case through legal channels to ensure that responsibility is fully assigned.
