Paphos and Yeroskipou launch marine anti-pollution programme

The municipalities of Paphos and Yeroskipou have launched a new four-month programme aimed at the early detection and management of marine pollution. The initiative, which covers the coastal stretches of Paphos, Yeroskipou, Acheleia, and Timi, involves a specialized contractor tasked with conducting daily sea patrols, seven days a week, across morning and afternoon shifts.

Operating with manned vessels, the contractor is responsible for monitoring both bathing zones and open waters for oil spills, sewage, solid waste, and other pollutants. Upon discovery of any contamination, the crew is authorized to implement immediate containment and cleanup measures using specialized equipment. In addition to physical remediation, the contractor will maintain detailed records and photographic documentation of incidents for reporting to the relevant authorities.

The project is supported by a budget of €50,000 plus VAT. The Cyprus Ports Authority is contributing €40,000, while the municipalities of Paphos and Yeroskipou are covering the remaining €10,000. This initiative complements ongoing efforts by the Paphos municipality to enhance general city hygiene, including the maintenance and disinfection of public waste bins in urban and coastal areas, as overseen by Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou.
