Paphos launches new maritime pollution control programme

The Municipality of Paphos has launched an inaugural organised programme aimed at preventing, detecting, and mitigating marine pollution along its coastal waters. This initiative, part of a broader strategy to protect the local environment, involves a four-month contract with a specialised provider to oversee surveillance activities.

Under this agreement, the contractor will deploy crewed vessels to patrol the coastal fronts of both Paphos and Yeroskipou seven days a week. Operations will run in both morning and afternoon shifts, covering areas near swimming zones and the open sea. The primary focus is the immediate identification and containment of oil spills, solid waste, debris, and sewage. In the event of a pollution incident, the contractor is mandated to use specialised equipment for cleanup and waste collection, while maintaining constant communication with relevant authorities.

This project represents the first time the municipality has implemented such a structured, proactive approach to marine environmental protection. By focusing on both prevention and rapid response, the authorities aim to ensure the quality of coastal waters for residents and visitors alike.
