Cyprus plans to modernize National Guard using EU's SAFE defense regulation

Nicosia is utilizing the European Union's SAFE regulation to secure borrowing mechanisms for financing the modernization of the Cypriot National Guard. This initiative aims to bolster the country's deterrent capabilities by investing in advanced military hardware and defense systems.

Several contracts for smaller equipment, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other systems with short production cycles, have already progressed and are expected to be integrated into the arsenal shortly. In contrast, larger procurement programs, including the potential acquisition of the EBRC Jaguar 6x6 armoured combat vehicle, are scheduled to commence implementation from 2028 onwards. This delay is attributed to high global demand within the international arms market.

The EBRC Jaguar, manufactured by a consortium consisting of KNDS France, Arquus, and Thales, is under consideration as part of efforts to upgrade armored units. Developed under the French SCORPION program to replace legacy platforms like the AMX-10RC and ERC-90 Sagaie, the vehicle is designed for versatile operations in diverse environments, including open, urban, and mountainous terrain.
