Wildfire containment efforts in Kouvaras, Attica
A significant wildfire broke out in the area of Kouvaras, Attica, on the morning of August 10, 2026, around 08:00 local time. Fueled by strong winds, the fire spread rapidly, prompting authorities to issue two emergency alerts via the 112 system, which resulted in the evacuation of residents from the settlement of Agios Stylianos. The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas, visited the site to oversee the response operations.
Firefighting efforts involve 197 firefighters, including specialized teams from the 1st and 8th EMODE, supported by 42 vehicles, seven aircraft, and two airplanes. The operation includes international support from France and Romania under a European pre-positioning program. While the fire caused damage to two poultry facilities, the situation was reported as improved by late morning, with ground and air units working to extinguish smoldering hotspots within the perimeter.
The region was under a high fire risk alert (category 4) at the time of the incident. Authorities remain on high alert due to the current weather conditions, which favor the rapid escalation of such emergencies.
