Strait of Hormuz remains closed as Iran-US tensions escalate

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil and gas conduit, remains blocked by Iran following ongoing military hostilities that began with US and Israeli strikes in late February. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed that while negotiations with Oman regarding new shipping lanes are in their final stages, the waterway will not reopen until the United States meets Tehran's conditions. These demands include an end to the war, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the cessation of sanctions and military threats.

Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated rhetoric, demanding compensation from Iran for various past conflicts and attacks, including the 2000 USS Cole bombing. The Authority of the Strait of the Persian Gulf has explicitly rejected Trump’s claims of holding "absolute control" over the route. Meanwhile, an interim agreement reached in June has effectively collapsed, with both parties accusing the other of bad faith. As of mid-August, the situation remains volatile, further complicated by recent shipping attacks in the Gulf of Oman and the Red Sea, which have caused oil prices to rise and global shares to decline.
