Mohsen Rezai appointed as Iran's new national security chief

The Iranian presidency announced on Sunday that 71-year-old Mohsen Rezai, the former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has been appointed as the new head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council. Rezai, who led the Revolutionary Guards for many years, is internationally wanted in connection to the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Rezai succeeds the late Ali Larijani, who was killed by Israeli forces in mid-March, only weeks after the outbreak of war between Iran and a U.S.-Israel coalition. The Israeli military had identified Larijani as Iran's de facto leader following the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day of the conflict. The current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was wounded in the same strike that killed Larijani and has not made a public appearance since.
