Staffing shortages reported for seasonal lifeguards in Cyprus

Andreas Karvounis, an official from the Ministry of Interior's Beach Safety Unit, announced on August 10, 2026, that Cyprus is currently facing staffing shortages among seasonal lifeguards. Specifically, the districts of Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca are reporting the highest number of unfilled positions, while Nicosia has successfully filled all its limited vacancies.

The country has a total of 377 approved lifeguard positions for this year, of which 107 are permanent. The remaining roles are seasonal, ranging from three to eleven months in duration. Karvounis noted that recruitment is particularly difficult for positions lasting only three or four months, as these durations act as a deterrent for potential applicants. Work schedules for these lifeguards are not standardized but are adjusted based on beach occupancy, safety requirements, and the availability of personnel at each specific location.
