Cyprus records significant surge in building permits during early 2026

Building activity in Cyprus showed robust growth during the first four months of 2026, according to the official state statistical service. Between January and April, authorities issued 2,915 building permits, representing a 35.1% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This surge is reflected in a 46.1% rise in the total value of permits to €1.67 billion and a 65% jump in authorized residential units, which totaled 7,131. In April alone, 639 permits were issued, a 10.7% year-on-year rise.

While this growth signals strong demand and a healthy construction sector, industry representatives from OEB and CCCI highlight persistent challenges. Michalis Antoniou of the OEB pointed to a critical labor shortage, while Filokypros Rousounides of the CCCI emphasized the need to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and accelerate licensing procedures. Despite these operational difficulties and rising construction costs, the sector remains a primary driver of the Cypriot economy, with stakeholders focused on managing the high demand through policy improvements.
