34-year-old arrested in Ayia Napa with undeclared cash and tobacco products

On Sunday, August 9, 2026, police officers from the Motorized Rapid Response Unit (MMAD) arrested a 34-year-old man in Ayia Napa during a routine vehicle check. Authorities discovered a total of €25,555 in cash and 30 packets of tobacco lacking the required health warnings or Cypriot tax stamps inside the vehicle.

While the Cyprus Mail reported the total sum as €25,555, local outlet ink.com provided a breakdown of the seized currency, identifying two separate amounts of €21,760 and €3,795. Following the arrest on suspicion of illegal possession of property and illegal possession of tobacco products, the suspect appeared before the Famagusta District Court on Monday. The court ordered his detention for four days.

The case is currently being investigated by the Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (TAE). The authorities continue to examine the origin of the funds and the nature of the contraband tobacco products to determine potential illicit activities related to the seizure.
