34-year-old man arrested in Ayia Napa for possession of illicit tobacco and large cash sums
A 34-year-old man was arrested in Ayia Napa late Sunday night after police discovered a significant amount of cash and untaxed tobacco products in his vehicle. During a patrol check at approximately 11:50 p.m. by members of the MMAD special unit, officers stopped the suspect and conducted a search, leading to the discovery of 30 packs of tobacco lacking required health warnings and tax stamps.
While the Cyprus Mail reported the total seized cash as €25,555, the local news outlet elemesos.com provided a more granular breakdown, specifying that officers found two separate amounts of €21,760 and €3,795. Following the arrest on charges of illegal possession of property and illicit tobacco products, the suspect was brought before the Famagusta District Court on Monday. The court ordered him to be held in custody for four days to facilitate the ongoing investigation conducted by the Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (TAE).
