Perseid meteor shower peaks over Cyprus

The annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most significant astronomical events of the summer, reached its peak on the night of August 12-13, 2026. Under ideal conditions, including a moonless sky, observers reported visibility of up to 100 meteors per hour. The phenomenon occurs as the Earth passes through debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet, with particles entering the atmosphere at speeds of 50-60 kilometers per second. While a total solar eclipse also occurred on August 12, it was not visible from Cyprus, according to local astronomical authorities.

Public interest led to large gatherings and organized astronomy events across Troodos mountain locations, including Agridia, Amiantos, and Prodromos, featuring telescopes and guided tours. While most events proceeded as planned, the astronomical gathering in Kyperounta was cancelled due to the death of the local priest. Heavy traffic congestion was reported on routes leading to observation sites, prompting concerns regarding future access and safety. Although the peak has passed, the Perseids remain active and visible until August 24, 2026.
