Perseid meteor shower peaks this week over Cyprus

The annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most prominent celestial events, reaches its peak on the night of August 12-13, 2026. Astronomers expect up to 100 meteors per hour as they enter Earth's atmosphere at speeds of approximately 59-60 kilometers per second. This year, observations are particularly favorable because the peak coincides with a New Moon, providing a dark, moonless sky that enhances visibility for even faint meteors.

Several events are organized in Cyprus to facilitate public viewing, particularly in mountain areas like Kyperounta and the Troodos Observatory in Agridia. Experts, including astrophysicist Chrysanthos Fakas and representatives from the 10.10 Cosmos–ANET Troodos Observatory consortium, recommend moving away from city lights to dark locations such as the Troodos mountains for the best experience. While the phenomenon has been active since July 17 and continues until August 24, the density of falling stars will be at its highest during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
