Perseid meteor shower peaks with events scheduled across Cyprus

The Perseid meteor shower, an annual astronomical event, is currently active and will reach its peak on the night of August 12 to 13, 2026. Experts estimate that observers may see up to 100 meteors per hour as they enter the Earth's atmosphere at speeds of approximately 59 to 60 kilometers per second. While a total solar eclipse is also occurring on August 12, it will not be visible from Cyprus. The phenomenon has been ongoing since July 17 and is expected to continue through August 24, 2026.

In Cyprus, the peak is anticipated to be particularly impressive due to the moonless sky. The Astronomical Society of Cyprus (ASTREK), the Cyprus Space Exploration Organization (CSEO), and the Fakas Tutoring Observatory have organized an astronomical night at the courtyard of the Holy Church of Saint Arsenios in Kyperounta, beginning at 21:00 on August 12. Founders and experts, including Chrysanthis Fakas and Sotiris Savvidis, have encouraged the public to observe from dark, open locations away from city lights, advising those heading to mountainous regions like Kyperounta or Amiantos to bring warm clothing.
