Perseid meteor shower peaks with nationwide viewing events in Cyprus

The annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most significant astronomical events of the summer, is reaching its peak on the night of August 12 to 13, 2026. Astronomers expect up to 100 meteors per hour to be visible under ideal conditions. The phenomenon is particularly favorable this year due to a new moon, which ensures a moonless sky and improved visibility for even fainter shooting stars. The Perseids occur as Earth passes through the debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet, with particles entering the atmosphere at speeds of 50-60 kilometers per second.

In Cyprus, the peak is being marked by several organized astronomy events, including gatherings in Kyperounta, Amiantos, Agridia, and Kampos. Experts advise observers to find dark locations away from city lights and look toward the northeastern sky after 11:00 p.m. While a total solar eclipse is also occurring on August 12, it will not be visible from Cyprus. The Troodos Observatory and the Cyprus Astronomical Society are hosting free public viewings with telescopes, guided tours, and educational activities to accommodate the high public interest.
