Cypriot athletes excel at the 2026 World U20 Athletics Championships
Cypriot athletes delivered notable performances at the 21st World U20 Athletics Championships, held in Oregon, USA, from August 5 to August 9, 2026. Marina Hatzikosta from the GSO club secured a bronze medal in the discus throw with a performance of 54.88 meters, maintaining Cyprus's tradition of winning medals in this age category for the fourth consecutive championship. This success follows her recent gold medal at the U18 European Championships.
In the men's hammer throw, Alexandros Gamraoui from the Gymnastikos Syllogos Ta Pagkypria (GSP) advanced to the final with a 72.38-meter throw and finished in seventh place globally with a final best of 72.09 meters. Anthi Apostolidou, competing in the women's hammer throw, finished 18th out of 22 athletes with a throw of 55.19 meters. She remains eligible to compete in the next U20 World Championships in 2028.
The Cypriot delegation faced significant logistical challenges due to the 10-hour time difference between Cyprus and Oregon, which impacted athletes' preparation and scheduling. Coaches Skevi Theodorou, Giannos Apostolidou, and Konstantinos Stavrou were recognized for their contribution to the athletes' development.
