Lifeguards rescue woman from strong currents at Kavros beach

On the morning of Monday, August 10, 2026, a dramatic rescue took place at Kavros beach in Apokoronas, Chania, after a woman was swept away by powerful sea currents. The incident occurred approximately ten minutes before the scheduled start of the lifeguard shift. Despite not yet being officially on duty, the lifeguards present took immediate action when they noticed the swimmer struggling to return to the shore due to the intense wave action.

One of the three lifeguards on-site entered the water and successfully reached the exhausted woman, while a second lifeguard provided essential support during the operation. Thanks to their prompt response, the woman was safely brought back to the beach. One of the responders noted that the incident took place while they were preparing the towers, highlighting that heightened safety measures are enforced on days when red flags are displayed to warn of dangerous conditions.
