Cyprus strengthens diplomatic and cooperation ties with Bahrain

Cyprus is intensifying its diplomatic and strategic engagement with Bahrain, aiming to solidify its role as a key bridge between the European Union and Gulf states. In a recent interview with the Bahraini newspaper Al Watan, the Cypriot Ambassador to Bahrain, Andreas Eliades, emphasized that regional security threats, specifically Iranian attacks on Bahrain and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced cooperation between Europe and the Gulf region.

The bilateral relationship received a major boost following President Nikos Christodoulides’ official visit to Manama and the establishment of a formal Cypriot embassy in the country. During the visit, the two nations signed nine agreements and memoranda of understanding spanning diverse sectors, including defense, maritime security, higher education, culture, tourism, and diplomatic training. Cyprus now maintains a diplomatic presence in all six GCC capitals.

Ambassador Eliades noted that during its presidency of the Council of the EU, Cyprus actively facilitated consultations to bolster European solidarity with its Middle Eastern partners. Moving forward, the focus remains on deepening collaboration in security and maritime affairs to ensure regional stability.
