European natural gas reserves reach lowest levels since 2021

Four years after the energy crisis sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Europe is facing renewed uncertainty regarding natural gas supplies. Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe indicates that the current storage filling level has dropped to 58%, marking the lowest level recorded since 2021, when Russia began reducing gas deliveries to the continent.

Energy expert Anne-Sophie Corbeau from the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University notes that, typically, summer filling levels should range between 75% and 80% as buyers capitalize on lower seasonal prices. The current shortfall is attributed to a combination of factors, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has reignited concerns over global supply chain stability, price volatility, and energy security ahead of the upcoming winter season. Natural gas remains essential for European industrial production, building heating, and electricity generation, making the current low storage levels a significant concern for the region's infrastructure stability.
