Vehicle access restricted at Spyros Beach in Larnaca

The Larnaca District Administration has installed safety barriers to restrict vehicle access to Spyros Beach (Kassianes), a dog-friendly area located near the Larnaca airport. The decision follows repeated attempts by the authorities to block unauthorized entry to the site, which is part of a protected Natura zone due to its proximity to the salt lake. District Officer Odysseas Hadjistefanou stated that previous measures, including the placement of large rocks and iron barriers, were circumvented by individuals, necessitating more permanent infrastructure. Officials also reported that 13 caravans were found on-site, with notices issued to their owners as part of an enforcement drive.

The installation of these barriers has triggered significant backlash from local dog owners, who argue that the new limitations unfairly affect vulnerable groups. According to protesters, the current access point, a narrow and rocky dirt path, is inaccessible to elderly visitors, people with disabilities, and dogs with mobility issues. Volunteers at the beach, such as Christina Agapiou, are calling for a review of the decision and are advocating for improved infrastructure, citing the success of more accessible facilities like those in the Paralimni Municipality.
