Protest held at Limassol General Hospital over child's brain death

On August 10, 2026, a protest was held at Limassol General Hospital following the tragic medical case of a four-year-old boy named Marios. Organized by the child's family, the demonstration followed the boy's diagnosis of bacterial meningitis, which his parents claim was improperly treated, leading to brain death.

The child began suffering from a fever on July 7-8, 2026. Initially, he was treated at home under the guidance of a family pediatrician, but after his condition failed to improve, he was admitted to Limassol General Hospital. His mother, Andri Charalambous, reports that despite their pleas, the medical staff failed to provide adequate care, including neglecting requests for a neurologist or infectious disease specialist consultation. When the family insisted on a transfer to the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia, the boy suffered brain death during the transport on July 14.

The family is now calling for accountability, accusing the medical staff of significant negligence and mismanagement of the case. The protest highlighted the parents' distress over receiving only antipyretics while the child's condition worsened, with participants demanding an investigation into the hospital's protocols and the failure to act on the severity of the meningitis.
