Isotita union challenges dismissal of prison officer Giorgos Maltezos

The Isotita prison union is initiating legal and political actions following the dismissal of Giorgos Maltezos, an official of its Prison Officers’ Branch, by the Minister of Justice and Public Order. The union is preparing an application for the Labour Disputes Court to challenge the firing as unlawful. Additionally, the issue is set to be discussed by the House Labour Committee after being registered by the AKEL party.

While the union has publicly criticized prison conditions and the dismissal, it has avoided extreme measures like strikes. Instead, the organization has hired Maltezos as a salaried employee and promoted him to the position of chair of the Prison Officers’ Branch. A potential protest outside the parliament during the committee hearing is currently under consideration, with a formal decision expected in the near future.
