Social workers to be deployed in Cypriot schools starting September 2026

Starting September 1, 2026, a new pilot program will introduce professional social workers into select schools across Cyprus. This initiative, launched by the Ministry of Education, aims to address rising concerns regarding violence and student delinquency while enhancing the overall psychological resilience of the children. The social workers will operate in tandem with existing educational psychologists to provide comprehensive support systems.

The tender process for these services has been finalized, with the contract awarded to the company CODECA. The pilot phase will encompass five specific schools: Pano Polemidion-Karmiotissas and Kaimakli primary schools, as well as the Linopetra, Faneromeni, and Palouriotissa secondary schools.

This project serves as a structured intervention following governmental promises to bolster safety and mental health support within the educational system. The rollout will be subject to ongoing monitoring and evaluation. The first official report on the program's progress and effectiveness is scheduled for submission by the contracting company this coming December, which will determine the potential for future expansion.
