Residents protest installation of new military antennas in Akrotiri

On Saturday, August 8, residents of the Kourion municipality, supported by the "Akrotiri Zero Hour" group, held a protest outside the British Bases in Akrotiri, Cyprus. The demonstration expressed strong opposition to the planned installation of 32 new military antennas in the area, a project that local stakeholders argue threatens public health, environmental safety, and land usage.

The protesters and local authorities are demanding an immediate suspension of all installation works, a comprehensive re-evaluation of the project, and full transparency regarding the purpose and potential impact of the infrastructure on local residents. Additionally, the British Bases are reportedly seeking to acquire an additional 340 decares of land, exacerbating concerns among the community about the increasing expansion of military facilities surrounding their homes.

Demonstrators have submitted a resolution requesting an official dialogue between the British authorities, the Republic of Cyprus, local officials, and the public. Participants emphasized that the health and well-being of the local population are not negotiable, calling for the government of the Republic of Cyprus to intervene and seek official clarifications from British officials regarding the development.
