Hybrid vehicles dominate car registrations in Cyprus for 2026

Data from the Cyprus Statistical Service for the period between January and July 2026 confirms that hybrid vehicles have become the leading choice in the domestic car market. During these seven months, hybrids accounted for 51.9% of all registered passenger cars, a significant increase from 43.3% recorded in the same period of 2025.

Simultaneously, traditional vehicle segments have faced declines. Petrol-powered cars saw their market share drop to 35.5% from 43.3%, while diesel vehicles decreased slightly to 8%. Electric vehicles also experienced a marginal decline, falling to 4.6% from 4.8% the previous year. Total passenger car registrations reached 26,841 units, representing an 11.1% increase compared to 2025. A defining feature of this year's market is the preference for used vehicles, which now comprise 67.9% (18,227 units) of total registrations, indicating a shift away from new car dealership sales.

These findings highlight a structural change in the Cypriot automotive market, driven by a growing preference for hybrid technology among consumers. As import trends favor used vehicles, local dealerships face challenges in maintaining their market share against incoming second-hand fleets.
