Temporary completion of Heroon Square redevelopment in Limassol

The newly redeveloped Heroon Square in Limassol was temporarily handed over to the municipality by the contractor on August 7, 2026. The project, which has sparked intense public debate on social media, aims to upgrade one of the city's most historic and iconic landmarks. While some residents have criticized aspects of the renovation, particularly regarding green spaces, the architect stated that no existing trees were removed, and all were treated in collaboration with local arborists and the Forestry Department.

Approximately 40 new trees have already been planted as part of the project. The current delivery remains temporary, as several components are still pending, including the installation of urban equipment, additional landscaping, and the completion of an underground hall located beneath the central monument. These remaining tasks are expected to be finished in the coming months, depending on weather conditions.

The initiative dates back to November 2019, when the former Limassol Municipal Council, led by then-mayor Nicos Nicolaides, launched an architectural competition to revitalize the square. Former mayor Nicolaides has defended the project, emphasizing that the success of the urban renewal cannot be judged by initial impressions alone, but rather by the long-term sustainability of materials and the degree to which citizens embrace the space.
