46-year-old woman appears in Athens court for 2010 Marfin bank arson case

A 46-year-old woman is appearing before an investigating magistrate in Athens today to provide her formal statement regarding the 2010 deadly arson attack on the Marfin bank. The incident, which occurred during a major protest against the first economic bailout memorandum on May 5, 2010, resulted in the deaths of three bank employees, including a pregnant woman. The suspect, who was recently extradited from the United Kingdom, faces charges for her alleged role in supporting the group that set the building on fire.

Her defense attorney, Kostas Papadakis, categorically denies the allegations, stating that there is no identification or satisfactory simulation linking his client to the individuals captured in photographic evidence from the scene. While the defendant acknowledges participating in the wider protest, she maintains her total innocence regarding the arson. The defense highlights that authorities had already investigated the suspect using the same evidence in 2022. Following her arrival at the Evelpidon court complex, the suspect is now providing her testimony to clarify her position and address the long-standing investigation.
