Cyprus Department of Forests warns of extreme wildfire risk

On August 11, 2026, the Department of Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus issued a critical warning regarding the heightened risk of forest fires. The combination of prolonged drought, record-breaking temperatures, and strong winds has created dangerous conditions for fire ignition and rapid spread across the country.

Authorities report that recent days have seen an increased number of wildfires triggered by avoidable human activities. These include agricultural operations and the use of machinery that generates heat or sparks in open-air environments. Consequently, the Department reiterated that from June 1 to September 30, it is strictly prohibited to use equipment capable of producing flames or sparks within state forests or a two-kilometer buffer zone surrounding them without prior written authorization from the Director of the Department of Forests.

Beyond accidental ignition, officials expressed growing concern regarding incidents of deliberate arson. To mitigate these risks, citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution and must contact their local Forestry Station to apply for necessary permits for essential outdoor work. The Department remains on high alert as these environmental conditions persist throughout the summer season.
