Forestry department issues fire warnings ahead of mid-August holiday

The Cyprus Department of Forestry has issued an urgent appeal for extreme vigilance regarding forest fires as the country faces high temperatures, prolonged drought, and strong winds. With a spike in human-caused fire incidents recorded recently, officials have reinforced the legal prohibition, effective from June 1 to September 30, against using heat-producing machinery or tools within state forests or within a two-kilometer buffer zone without written authorization.

Ahead of the upcoming August 15 holiday, the department has increased its readiness to manage the expected influx of visitors to forest areas. Authorities explicitly urge the public to use only designated, safe areas for barbecues, strictly avoiding the burning of wood, and ensuring all embers are fully extinguished after use. Furthermore, homeowners are warned that they must not allow third parties to burn garden waste while clearing yards, as such actions are strictly prohibited.

Engaging in activities that cause fire is a criminal offense subject to severe penalties. The public is urged to cooperate closely with the Forestry Department and the police, and to report any suspicious activity or smoke immediately by calling the Forestry Department at 1407 or the Fire Service at 112.
