High fire risk alert in Cyprus for the August 15 holiday

The Cyprus Forestry Department has issued a "red alert" for forest fire risks, effective Saturday, August 15, 2026, due to extreme temperatures, prolonged drought, and anticipated crowds visiting rural and forested areas for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary holiday. Officials have expressed concern over both negligent human activity and reports of malicious arson.

From June 1 to September 30, it is strictly forbidden to use machinery, tools, or equipment that generate heat, flames, or sparks within state forests or a two-kilometer buffer zone without special permission. During the holiday period, grilling is permitted exclusively in designated picnic area facilities. Holiday home owners are specifically warned against burning yard waste and are urged to instruct any hired laborers to follow strict safety protocols.

Causing a forest fire is a serious criminal offense punishable by strict legal penalties. Authorities emphasize that failure to comply with safety regulations threatens the environment and public safety. Citizens are encouraged to cooperate with the Forestry Department and the police, and to report any smoke or suspicious activity immediately by calling 1407 for the Forestry Department or 112 for the Fire Service.
