State sector employment increased to 53,747 in July 2026
According to official data from the Statistical Service released in August 2026, the number of state employees reached 53,747 in July 2026. This represents an increase of 300 individuals, or 0.6%, compared to the same month in 2025. For the seven-month period from January to July 2026, the average number of state employees saw a more modest growth of 0.3% compared to the same period in 2025.
Sectoral trends varied significantly: the Educational Service and Security Forces experienced growth of 2.6% and 0.7%, respectively. Conversely, employment in the Public Service declined by 1.0%. Indefinite-term contract employees (EAX) increased by 1.7% overall, with a notable 25.7% surge within the educational sector. Meanwhile, the Security Forces saw a near-total reduction of 99.6% in short-term contract staff, primarily due to the expiration of contracts that were not renewed after August 2025. Permanent staff levels grew marginally by 0.3%, totaling 32,935 employees.
