Oil spill reported off Oman coast following tanker incident

A massive oil spill covering approximately 390 square kilometers has been detected off the coast of Oman, near the Hallaniyat islands in the Dhofar province. The spill originates from the tanker 'Caroline Bezengi', which was carrying roughly 110,000 tons of sanctioned Russian crude oil. The vessel reportedly suffered an internal explosion on June 8 while sailing off the port of Mukalla in southern Yemen, eventually drifting to its current stranded location in the Arabian Sea.

The Omani Environment Authority confirmed the spill through satellite imagery, noting that efforts are underway to address the environmental impact. The situation is considered critical due to the ongoing summer monsoon season, which lasts from June through September. These weather conditions, characterized by strong winds and high waves, pose a severe risk to the tanker's structural integrity. Concerns remain that a potential hull failure could lead to an environmental catastrophe of unpredictable proportions if the ship breaks apart under the pressure of the seasonal weather.
