Military aviation activity increases over Cyprus

On August 11, 2026, residents across Nicosia reported frequent flights of Turkish F-16 fighter jets originating from the Tymbou airport in the occupied northern territory. Reports of military aircraft sightings also emerged from the Larnaca district, sparking concern among the public. These flights follow a trend of intensified air activity within the Nicosia Flight Information Region, which has been escalating since Turkey deployed six F-16 jets and air defense systems to the northern part of the island on March 9, 2026, in response to Greece stationing four F-16s at the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos on March 2.

On August 13, 2026, new public anxiety occurred regarding low-flying aircraft over the Kiti and Pervolia areas. Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas clarified that these specific maneuvers involved Greek F-16s flying between Paphos, Troodos, and Larnaca, alongside a departing French C-130 transport aircraft, all conducted under routine bilateral protocols. Minister Palmas noted that while these exercises are scheduled, the Republic of Cyprus continues to record frequent, unauthorized incursions by Turkish F-16s and takes appropriate diplomatic measures in response to each violation.
