Persona Theatre Group returns with an additional performance of Seven Against Thebes

Following positive reception during its summer tour in Nicosia and Limassol, the Persona Theatre Group has announced an additional performance of Aeschylus’ tragedy “Seven Against Thebes.” The event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, at 9:00 p.m. and will take place at the Makarios III Amphitheatre of the School for the Blind in Nicosia.

Directed by award-winning director Lea Maleni, this production offers a contemporary interpretation of the final play in Aeschylus’ Theban cycle. The narrative explores the fratricidal conflict between Oedipus's sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, while examining themes of civil strife, trauma, and the cyclical nature of violence. As part of its unique dramaturgy, the performance incorporates seven different languages live on stage.

This production was originally commissioned for the 29th International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama 2026. It received institutional support from the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute and the Deputy Ministry of Culture’s Department of Contemporary Culture. The play draws heavily on collective memory to address how historical myth intersects with modern societal challenges.
