Driver found dead in vehicle fire near Spata and Pikermi

On August 11, 2026, a fire broke out at approximately 15:30 in low vegetation between the areas of Imeros Pevkos and Etos Steko, in the Attica region. During the firefighting operations, a body was discovered inside a charred passenger vehicle. Emergency services were alerted via a 112 message issued at 15:42 to notify residents in the vicinity.

The firefighting effort involved 121 firefighters, 36 vehicles, two pedestrian units from the 1st EMODE, and volunteers. The force included 23 firefighters with 5 vehicles from Romania and 18 firefighters with 3 vehicles from France, stationed in Greece under the European pre-positioning program. The Municipality of Spata provided water tankers, and five aerial units were deployed periodically to contain the blaze.

While investigations are ongoing, preliminary information suggests the fire may have originated from the vehicle. Some reports indicate the driver lost control of the car due to a medical episode before it went off-road and caught fire. Authorities found the victim slumped in the passenger seat. Initial police searches for weapons or incendiary materials inside the vehicle yielded no results, and further forensic examination is expected to confirm the exact circumstances of the death.
