Cyprus initiates transition to new National Ambulance Service

The transition process toward establishing a unified National Ambulance Service has officially begun following a directive from Charalambidis. Authorities have set a strict implementation deadline, with the official launch date scheduled for November 1, 2026. Logistics are currently being coordinated to ensure efficient operations and seamless emergency service delivery across the country.

Riana Konstantinou, head of the Ambulance Service, clarified that this reform represents a fundamental shift in patient care rather than a mere administrative change. A key objective of the new framework is to integrate both public emergency responders and private sector ambulances, which previously operated without a standardized regulatory system. This reform aims to address critical gaps in oversight, enabling the state to ensure the quality and safety of healthcare services while establishing a legal registration process for private providers.

This initiative follows long-standing challenges regarding the regulation of private ambulance services and the lack of a comprehensive legislative framework. The service aims to improve geographic coverage and coordination of medical responses throughout the country, effectively creating a unified system for the first time.
