Remedica pharmaceuticals face mass recall, causing disruption in Cyprus health system

On August 10, 2026, the pharmaceutical company Remedica announced a mass recall of products, triggering significant disruption within the Cyprus General Health System (GESY). The timing of the recall, which coincides with the August 15 holiday period, has created logistical challenges for both patients and healthcare providers. Many doctors are currently on summer leave, and numerous pharmacies are closed, making it difficult for patients to secure immediate guidance or alternative medications.

The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) is actively seeking solutions to mitigate the impact of the recall. For products with existing equivalents in the GESY catalogue, the HIO is working on technical measures to allow pharmacists to perform direct substitutions, thereby avoiding the need for immediate prescription revisions. However, for medications lacking suitable alternatives, doctors must intervene to adjust patient treatment plans. The HIO is currently working to secure necessary stock from alternative sources to bridge the shortage, with some progress already reported for specific medicines.
