Remedica pharmaceuticals recalled in Cyprus

On August 10, 2026, the Cypriot pharmaceutical company Remedica announced a voluntary recall of a series of medicinal products. The incident has caused significant disruption for patients within the General Health System (Gesy), as many are finding it difficult to contact their doctors and pharmacists during the mid-August holiday period.

The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has categorized the 12 affected products into two groups. Five products have available equivalents with the same active substance, while seven products—including Clonotril, Cloxacillin, Hydralazine, Epsitron, and Methyldopa—lack direct substitutes. For most of these, doctors may prescribe alternatives from the same pharmacological class, though Hydralazine 25mg and Methyldopa 250mg currently have no available alternatives within the system. The HIO is working on technical solutions to allow pharmacists to substitute certain medicines directly, but more complex cases require a new medical assessment.

Health authorities, including the director of Pharmaceutical Services, Elena Panagiotopoulou, have urged patients not to discontinue their treatments abruptly. Patients are advised to contact their physicians to secure replacement prescriptions, while the HIO prepares to issue further detailed instructions and search for additional supply sources to resolve shortages.
