Larnaca and Manama to establish formal twinning

Larnaca is set to become the first Cypriot city to establish a formal twinning arrangement with a city in the Gulf region, following the approval of the proposal by the Bahraini cabinet. Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras announced the development on August 11, 2026, highlighting it as a strategic move to enhance the municipality’s international presence and foster cooperation across multiple sectors.

This initiative aligns with a broader effort by Cyprus and Bahrain to strengthen bilateral ties. According to the Cypriot ambassador to Bahrain, Andreas Eliades, the collaboration focuses on various strategic areas, including defense, shipping, investment, tourism, and technology. Officials emphasize that the partnership is particularly relevant given recent regional security developments, with both nations identifying maritime security and freedom of navigation as shared priorities. Economic discussions are expected to prioritize financial services, fintech, logistics, and tourism as the two regions seek to deepen their long-term institutional and diplomatic engagement.
