Controversy over investigative journalist Makarios Drousiotis's crowdfunding campaign

Investigative journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis is currently facing three separate criminal investigations in Cyprus, including charges of spreading false news, breach of personal data, and conducting an illegal fundraiser. The latter stems from an online crowdfunding campaign he launched to cover his legal expenses for ongoing court battles, including the 'Sandy' case and his book 'Mafia State'. Within three days, Drousiotis raised 50,000 euros. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou subsequently ordered an investigation into whether this campaign violates the 2014 Fundraising Law, which requires prior authorization for public appeals.

Legal experts and Drousiotis himself have argued that the crowdfunding initiative does not qualify as a public fundraiser under the current law, as it targets personal legal costs rather than public-interest causes. The Cyprus Police have confirmed they received a formal letter from the Licensing Authority on August 12 and will now evaluate whether any criminal offenses were committed. Minister Ioannou has stated that no one will be prosecuted if the investigation finds the activity does not fall under the law. Meanwhile, the Union of Cyprus Journalists and the AKEL political party have criticized the authorities for their rapid response in this case, alleging selective sensitivity and a potential attempt to intimidate a journalist. The Cyprus Bar Association has also urged caution, emphasizing the need to respect the presumption of innocence.
