European Commission coordinates with Meta and TikTok following Ceuta crisis

Following a surge of approximately 72,000 migrants attempting to enter the Spanish territory of Ceuta from Morocco last month, the European Commission has intensified its cooperation with Meta and TikTok. The influx was reportedly fueled by viral misinformation on social media, including false claims that the border was open. In response, European Commission official Henna Virkkunen and Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari announced that these platforms have voluntarily activated crisis protocols to safeguard the integrity of the digital space.

The initiative involves an ad hoc escalation and cooperation mechanism, alongside daily information sharing between the Commission, Europol, and the social media companies. The primary goal is to limit the influence of criminal networks that use digital platforms to coordinate mass crossings and to strengthen partnerships with local fact-checking organizations. While the Commission currently deems these voluntary measures effective, it has not ruled out the possibility of imposing mandatory requirements on the technology firms if the situation necessitates further intervention.
