U.S. forces strike Panamanian-flagged vessel in Gulf of Oman

Early Tuesday, U.S. military forces engaged the Panamanian-flagged cargo ship M/V Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman, approximately 71 nautical miles off the coast of Pakistan. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), an American military helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles at the vessel, successfully disabling its steering mechanism after the crew ignored repeated warnings to stop their approach toward an Iranian port.

The operation is part of an ongoing naval blockade enforced by the Trump administration to exert economic pressure on the Iranian regime. While U.S. officials noted that the ship appeared to be attempting to transfer its crew to another civilian vessel following the strike, there were no immediate reports of casualties. The incident resulted in significant damage to the ship's control systems, rendering it unable to continue its intended course.

This event is part of a broader, intensifying campaign by U.S. forces to enforce the maritime embargo on Iranian ports. CENTCOM stated that the naval enforcement measures have already forced approximately 55 commercial vessels to change their original course to avoid the blockade.
