Vanja Drkusic transfer to PAOK collapses due to Espanyol interest

PAOK’s attempt to sign 26-year-old Slovenian defender Vanja Drkusic from Zenit Saint Petersburg has collapsed unexpectedly. The Thessaloniki club had reached a formal agreement with Zenit for a one-year loan deal, including a purchase option for the summer of 2027. Drkusic, who was expected to arrive in Greece on Friday, August 14, to undergo medical examinations and finalize the transfer, ultimately canceled the move at the last minute.

The deal fell through after the player and his agent received a competing offer from the Spanish club Espanyol. Drkusic informed PAOK officials of his preference to play in La Liga, leading the Greek club to immediately withdraw from negotiations and cease their pursuit of the player. PAOK had previously shown interest in the defender during the winter transfer window but failed to complete the move at that time as well.

Following this development, PAOK has shifted its focus to alternative targets to strengthen its defensive line. The team currently maintains other center-back options, including Michailidis, Chatzidiakos, and Elustondo, as they continue to address their roster needs for the upcoming season.
