Cyprus Labour Inspection official clarifies wildfire smoke risks to air quality

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Chrysanthos Savvides, Senior Labour Inspection Officer and head of the Air Quality and Support Branch in Cyprus, issued guidance regarding the impact of wildfire smoke on public health. He emphasized that smoke can compromise air quality even at significant distances from the fire, depending heavily on wind speed and direction.

Savvides stated that in serious incidents, authorities do not need to wait for formal air measurements before implementing protective measures for the public. The type of pollutants released depends on the materials being burned, and the level of danger is directly linked to the concentration of these substances. As smoke travels further from the source, the concentration of pollutants typically decreases due to dispersion.

The department advises citizens to move away from the source of any fire to allow emergency services and authorities to manage the incident effectively. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with existing health conditions, are urged to exercise extra caution during such events.
