Man arrested for multiple arson incidents in Sindos, Thessaloniki

Authorities in Greece have arrested a 59-year-old man in Sindos, Thessaloniki, on charges of multiple counts of intentional arson. According to the Fire Department's investigative units, the suspect is accused of igniting six separate fires in dry grass, reeds, and agricultural land between August 8 and August 11, 2026. Specific incidents included a fire on August 8 that burned approximately 20 acres and another on August 9 that consumed about 15 acres. On August 11, he allegedly ignited four additional blazes in the same vicinity before being apprehended.

The suspect has been charged with felony-level intentional arson, which carries risks to both property and human life. Following his arrest, he admitted to the acts, claiming he acted out of impulsive "stupidity" and to vent stress and fatigue accumulated from his job. He reportedly stated that he used napkins to start the fires and had consumed alcohol prior to some of the incidents. A video recording documenting the suspect in the act was also released to the public.

The man was brought before a prosecutor and subsequently referred to an investigating magistrate. Following the confirmation of both the prosecutor and the magistrate, he was ordered to be held in pre-trial detention while awaiting further legal proceedings.
