National and Kapodistrian University of Athens opens Cyprus branch

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has launched a new branch in Cyprus, marking a significant step in the internationalization of Greek public universities. The university reports high student interest across several departments, with the Medical School experiencing particularly competitive admission. According to official data released on August 12, 2026, the medical program saw an acceptance rate of 20%, as only one in five applicants was selected following a rigorous evaluation process based on academic merit and quality standards.

In addition to Medicine, the branch is processing applications for the Departments of Primary Education, Business Administration, Economics, Psychology, Nursing, and a specialized English-language Classics program covering ancient Greek history, archaeology, and literature. The institution confirmed that teaching staff at the Cyprus campus include the same faculty members currently teaching in Athens, with ongoing efforts to recruit additional senior academics to be based exclusively on the island. Facilities and laboratories have been completed and are equipped with modern technology to accommodate the incoming student body.

The initiative aims to bolster academic ties between Greece and Cyprus by offering high-level educational programs. Educational authorities are currently finalizing the assessment of infrastructure and operational requirements as the university begins its first phase of academic activities.
